The Audience is the thing
One of the reasons I love Shakespeare so much is that he trusted his audience was smart enough to keep up . Nowadays, Hollywood - with few exceptions of course - has the poor habit of not trusting the audiences intelligence and begins the process of bogging down its prose with poor exposition; and in this process of catering to the lowest common denominator, they create a self-fulfilling prophecy and begin dumbing down the audience along with the story itself.
I laugh when I imagine Shakespeare having to take notes from some studio executive who lectures him about his confounding poetry not playing well in the 18-34 demographic.
SE: Bill, baby. This line: For in that sleep of death what dreams may come when we have, blah, blah, blah. You’ve already lost me!!! Can’t you just say: Dying is scary. I mean, come on! Hamlet just goes on and on. Furthermore, why doesn’t he just go and Kill the uncle right away? And I really think Hamlet and Ophelia need a hot sex scene.
