Dear @ariannahuff and @Huffingtonpost
I’m terribly disturbed by a video I found on the Huffpo today.
Im disturbed for a number of reasons.
The post in question is the execution video of an Afghani woman charged with adultery. She is executed by her accusers -that bastion of enlightenment- The Taliban .
Of course the content is disturbing. The video clearly shows the woman being shot to death at point blank range while surrounded by a 150 or so men who chant “mujahideen” once she is killed. While the content is beyond disturbing, my objection has nothing to do with the posting of the video itself. While undeniably tragic, I feel it’s important for the world to see such barbaric behavior so that we as a global village will no longer tolerate such ignorance and abuse. I have always felt the real justification for war in Afghanistan -if ever there is a justification for war- was the establishment and equalization of woman’s rights in the region. Clearly this video illustrates our failure there. But I digress…. What I found most disturbing about the video - and this is where you come in @ariannahuff - was the videos prelude. To access the videos content one has to watch a 30 sec advert for either Android smartphones, and or for some new bourgeois web series for AOL about a dog sitter. Neither ad allowed for the option to skip the advert. To me the message was clear: This execution is brought to you by Android and AOL…. It perfectly sums up the dehumanizing aspects of our post modern consumer/advertising driven culture to say the least. Ever since your merger with AOL I’ve desperately tried to overlook the Hoffpos over saturation of advertisements and fluff pieces, but this to me is an extreme low for your publication. If you’re going to post such a video for the world to see, and I believe the world needs to see it, the least you can do is show some respect and remove any and all advertisements that preface such a video in anyway wherever it appears. Again, I feel it was important to watch this video, and bold of you to post it. It steels my resolve that the world has room for great improvement, and that we all have a great part to play in our worlds betterment. Improvement always begins with becoming more aware of what’s around us. However, I feel sick to my stomach that the power of this video is sullied by the gross and disrespectful advertising one is forced to watch beforehand….
I’m aware that news and entertainment are closer than ever, and that both need advertising dollars to remain operational. It’s a sad paradox for sure. However, In my opinion, certain content is above advertising altogether. This is a prime example….
Thank you @ariannahuff for the Huffpo. It’s a great resource. That said, I believe there is always room for improvement. Please send your thoughts about these comments to @ErnestoRiley, and help me understand my disappointment in the Huffington Post today.
Thank you.
